ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A St. Paul, Minn., man rescued a mother and her 7-month-old baby girl from a burning duplex late Monday night, and Tuesday morning, officials confirmed that fire was intentionally set.

The fire broke out in a duplex on the 1200 block of Albemarle Street before 8 p.m. Monday. St. Paul Fire Marshal Steven Zaccard said a man was about a block away from the duplex when he saw the fire and ran to an open window. That man was Richard Johann.

"I just had a feeling that somebody was in there," he recalled. "You know, I just went for it."

Johann, 34, was having dinner with his girlfriend at the Tin Cup when he stepped out of the restaurant and saw smoke coming out of the duplex a block away. He ran to the home, pushed in a window and saw a woman in her 20s with a baby girl. The woman apparently didn't notice the fire, so Johann called out and told her to get out.

"I started screaming at her, 'You gotta get out of the house. Gotta get out, your house is on fire,'" Johann told Fox 9 News.

Video shows the chaos as the mother handed her baby out the window. Another neighbor took the child while Johann helped the mother out the window, saving the life of the young mother who was visiting her sister and her four children; however, that family of five was not home at the time.

Zaccard said arson is to blame for the flames and crews are continuing to investigate the incident, but a reward may be available for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information is urged to call 1-800-723-2020.
