Minneapolis teacher charged with stalking student, seeking sex

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A social studies teacher at South High School in Minneapolis has been charged with criminal sexual conduct after a student contacted police to say the 46-year-old was urging her to have sex with him.

Dan Arlen Anderson, of Oakdale, made his first court appearance on June 23 to face two felony charges, one of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one of aggravated stalking. His next hearing is set for July 31.

“It is very disappointing that a very few individuals use their position of authority to prey on the young people they are supposed to develop into intelligent adults and productive citizens,” Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said. “I hope this prosecution sends a clear message to cut out this totally inappropriate behavior.”

TEXTS AND PHOTOS SENT TO UNDERAGE GIRL

Charging documents state that a 17-year-old student contacted police on May 17 to say that Anderson was trying to get her to have sex with him. She agreed to turn over her phone to investigators, and prosecutors say police recovered incriminating text messages and photos sent by Anderson.

The victim told police that two days before she filed her report, Anderson asked if she would consider having sex with him. Anderson then apparently pulled her from her next class so she could talk about her answer, and pulled her out of class again the next day so he could ask them to have sex that very day. The victim made excuses not to meet him, but he asked for her number and then began sending her invitations to "mess around" while in class.

The teen told police that Anderson asked her to come to his room right after school on May 16, but when she refused, he asked her to sneak out of her house that night. Charging documents state that Anderson also asked her if she wanted to do "dirty texting" with him and sent her a message graphically explaining how he wanted to have intercourse with her.

The girl told police she was upset and felt pressured by Anderson, and told her parents. Under their direction, she asked Anderson to text her a photo to see how he would respond. Charging documents state that he then sent a photo of his exposed penis twice.

TEACHER ADMITS SEX WITH TEEN WAS GOAL

The day after the teen filed her report with police, an investigator spoke with Anderson. The criminal complaint states that Anderson not only admitted that he asked for the student's phone number, but also that he sent her a dozen messages that were sexual -- two of which included pictures of his own genitals. Police say he also admitted that his goal was to have sex with the girl.
