Weather warning sirens: What they mean in your county

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - You know something weather related is going on when you hear the outdoor warning sirens, but it's not always going off to indicate a tornado.

Here's the breakdown from the National Weather Service on warning siren criteria that changed in 2007:

1) Sirens go off when a strong, severe thunderstorm is moving into your community with excess winds of 70 mph

2) Sirens go off alerting of a tornado warning

To make matters more confusing, each individual county in Michigan has different guidelines as to when they sound the siren. Where you live depends on when the siren goes off.
