Woman arrested after breaching security at Fox 2 faces a felony

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - Surveillance video shows a woman in a frenzy trying to get into our Fox 2 building. Instead, Dr. Sharon McRae ended up in the Southfield Police Department's lockup facing felony charges.

The 51-year-old was arraigned for fleeing an eluding police, and we have video of how that chase started - first, with her driving erratically in the Fox 2 parking lot and then out the front gate with Southfield police in hot pursuit.

"She was flying in between cars. The cones that they had up were flying up and down," says Fox 2 photographer Jim Kelel.

The judge told McRae she could face up to two years in prison for the chase which clearly put people in danger, including a member of our Fox 2 crew. She asked for a court-appointed attorney and during her arraignment McRae made a bizarre request.

"I'm asking for protection under the federal whistleblower protection act," she said.

Her request is similar to what several Fox 2 employees heard her saying.

"She was ranting and raving, said that the FBI had been following her, basically had been chasing her since downtown Detroit," says Kelel.

"I head her yell, briefly, 'I know something about the VA scandal. I'm a whistleblower,'" says photographer Greg Tatchio.

Websites and online records indicate McRae is a doctor who got her degree in 2006. It does appear she's worked in the VA system in several states, but the state medical board of Ohio suspended her license in 2012 due to mental illness and gave her two years probation. The state of Kentucky also placed her medical license on probation for five years in 2013.

McRae told the judge she's been living at the Red Roof Inn on Northwestern Highway. Fox 2's Robin Schwartz confirmed she does live here and that she pays $280 a week.

Bond was set at $1,000 and if she's released, McRae was ordered not to come within 100 feet of Fox 2's property.

She also gave the judge another Southfield address where she says she gets her mail.

No one answered the door at that address, but Schwartz reached a woman by phone who says she believes McRae is a whistleblower who fears for her life. The doctor says she now only works part time.
