Officers patrol University Avenue to raise light rail awareness

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

When it comes to the light rail lines carving their way through busy cities, safety is the top priority -- and that's why police are taking to the streets to make sure drivers are looking for the trains that will start running soon.

In a few weeks, the Green Line will officially get the green light to begin service, but it may take some time for motorists to get used to the new rules of the road in the area.

"They are real quiet -- whisper quiet," Officer Scott Braski told Fox 9 News. "Anyone not aware of their surroundings -- it might be the end of the line for them."

Braski has been patrolling University Avenue to educate drivers and pedestrians about what they should do when the trains start coming through. So far, Metro Transit says 3 drivers have tried -- unsuccessfully -- to beat the trains since testing started last month.

"Motorists have to be aware that trains are operating here and the consequences are different than a few months ago," John Siqveland, with Metro Transit, said.

For now, Braski is only handing out warnings -- but once the trains start rolling, he warns that anyone who ignores his advice could lose more than just a few dollars for a traffic ticket.

"Just take your time," he recommended. "Look, listen, obey the traffic laws, and everything will be just fine."
