Mother forgives hit-and-run driver who killed her son in a wheelchair

DETROIT (WJBK) - Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident after a man in a wheelchair was struck by a motorist early Tuesday.

The accident happened around 4 a.m. near Grand Boulevard and Grand River Avenue.

Police say the victim, 27-year-old Anthony McKoy, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A dark-colored semi truck is said to have struck him.

His mother tells FOX 2's Roop Raj McKoy was on his way to bring her and his grandmother a Mother's Day gift. She also says witnesses told her the driver of the semi truck stopped and looked back, but then kept on driving.

"My message to that person is, if you have a heart turn yourself in. I forgive you because I know that's what my son wants. He [wouldn't] want me to have hate in my heart right now. And I'm not going to lie to you, I do have hate in my heart right now for that person because you just left my son there. You could've got out; it was an accident. But you left the scene and my son died because of this," says Camilla McKoy.

The nonprofit group Olivia Loving Hearts is donating money to pay for McCoy's cremation. The Cole Funeral Home is covering the additional costs for the funeral.
