GARDEN CITY, Mich. (WJBK) - A 13-year-old junior high school cheerleader from Melvindale is in critical condition after an accident involving a golf cart and a Jeep. Marissa Campbell is one of four girls who were riding in the golf cart at the time of the accident.

Garden City Police Chief Robert Muery tells FOX 2's Robin Schwartz the girls were taking a ride around 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the area of Block and Garden Avenue.

He says a preliminary investigation shows the 14-year-old girl driving the cart failed to yield to traffic at a stop sign.

Marissa was airlifted to University of Michigan Hospital with life-threatening head injuries. The driver of the cart was hospitalized with less serious injuries. Two younger girls, who are 7 and 11 years old, received minor injuries.

We're told the children went for the ride after a family member's confirmation ceremony. At least three of the girls involved in the crash are related.

Fellow students at Strong Middle School where Marissa attends were informed about the accident by teachers and the school is providing counseling for anyone who needs it.

Police say alcohol was not a factor and the 52 year old driver of the Jeep from Dearborn Heights will not face charges. We're told the driver tried to veer away from the cart but was unable to avoid it. The police chief is using the tragic crash as an opportunity to remind people that operating a golf cart is not safe on sidewalks or streets and is not allowed.

An GoFundMe account has been set up to donate to Marissa's family to help pay for medical expenses. Click here for more information.

You can also purchase shirts and key chains to support Marissa and her family. That information is on this Facebook group's page.
