Seantrel Henderson's NFL Draft status unknown after latest failed drug test

Posted: Updated:

Former Cretin-Derham Hall and University of Miami star offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson admitted during Senior Bowl week in January that his three suspensions while with the Hurricanes were because of marijuana use.

NFL teams were notified last week that Henderson tested positive for marijuana during the combine in Indianapolis, leaving his status in the upcoming draft a big 6-foot-7-inch, 331-pound question mark.

Henderson’s pro day workout didn’t go well back in April, when he cut his work short. His agent stated Henderson was dehydrated and feeling sick, but before this week, he was expected to go in the middle rounds of the NFL draft, which begins on Thursday night and continues Friday and Saturday.

When Henderson left Minnesota for Miami, it seemed like the sky was the limit. Fox 9 News caught up with the star offensive lineman for Cretin Durham Hall four years ago, when he was the top high school football player in the country.

Yet, since he chose to play at the University of Miami, No. 77 has fumbled his future prospects by admitting he was suspended three times for smoking marijuana and never quite living up to his immense talent and potential.

Mike Morris, of 105 The Ticket, trained Henderson when he was in high school, and he told Fox 9 News the star student has always been his own worst enemy.

"He's always in his own way," Morris said. "He has the unfortunate ability to always get in trouble and find it. That's Seantrel. He'll find trouble or trouble finds him."

His co-host, Bob Sansevere, still believes that Henderson could sign on with a team as a free agent, albeit at a much cheaper price, if he's willing and able to stay clean.

"If he doesn't have any more issues -- because he's going to get tested a lot in the NFL -- and if he keeps coming up clean, then he might be able to put a career together," Sansevere said. "But, it's really up to him."

Players testing positive for marijuana at the combine is nothing new. In fact, the Minnesota Vikings drafted Percy Harvin after he did the same thing 5 years ago, and he went on to become the offensive rookie of the year and he won a Super Bowl ring with the Seattle Seahawks last season.
