VIDEO: Mother warns of water safety after son's near-drowning

Posted: Updated:

Recently , several children have drowned in local pools. Now, one Minneapolis mother whose son's near-drowning was caught on camera is using it as a tool to teach others about how quickly fun can turn frantic.

"It's been super hard because I wasn't expecting this to happen," Jasmin Pearson told Fox 9 News.

Although the boy in the video is okay, there were some very scary moments this past weekend at the Shoreview Community Center.

Pearson admits she thought having her son Dallas's first birthday party in the pool would be fun, but she never imagined it would come close to being her 4-year-old's last celebration.

"I feel bad as a parent because I should have been more attentive to him instead of being with the little babies even though I had just seen him," Pearson said. "It takes only a few minutes for it to happen."

Pearson and the birthday boy were in the shallow end of the pool with a friend's young son on Sunday when her 4-year-old followed an older boy to the deep end and got in.

Although he quickly realized he was in over his head and tried to grab the ledge, it was too slippery. Soon, the boy was flailing in the water, going under and coming back up a number of times.

All the while, there were four lifeguards watching the pool and at least a dozen people within a few feet -- but they didn't notice or realize he was in trouble.

Eventually, the boy drifted into shallower water and dropped to the bottom of the pool. That's when Sabrina Nettle's son felt him and pulled him from the water, carrying his limp body to his mother on the other side of the pool.

"I'm glad I was there, but for my son to see a lifeless body -- it's still in the back of his head and I wish he wouldn't have seen that," Nettles said.

Nettles performed CPR while paramedics rushed to the scene. Luckily, despite spending 2 to 3 minutes under water, the 4-year-old is already out of the hospital and has made a full recovery.

Even so, Pearson said she will make sure her children take swimming lessons and wear life jackets whenever they are around water.

Fox 9 News attempted to contact the Shoreview Community Center for this story, but did not hear back from anyone there.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
