TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL: List of Minnesota school closings

Posted: Updated:

The list of Minnesota school closings started piling up Wednesday evening in anticipation of extreme subzero temperatures Thursday morning.

Anoka-Hennepin, the state's largest school district, announced all schools would be closed Thursday, Jan. 23 due to dangerously low temperatures and wind chills in the forecast.

Minneapolis Public Schools, St. Paul Public Schools and dozens of other districts followed.

Anoka-Hennepin officials said the decision to close was based on the official announcement from the National Weather Service that states "exposed skin may freeze in as little as 5 to 10 minutes."

The wind chill warning that will remain in effect through noon on Thursday also warns that the combination of the subzero temperatures and strong winds could cause frostbite and hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

Temperatures are expected to start rising again on Thursday afternoon. Classes and activities are set to resume on Friday.
