Metro Detroit braces for freezing rain and ice this weekend

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

The weather forecast calls for rain this weekend, with a chance for some freezing rain, sleet and ice Saturday evening especially in the northern suburbs.

DTE Energy says it is preparing for the possible ice storm. "Just to give you an idea of what ice can do to power lines - just a quarter inch of ice can add 500 pounds of weight to a span of power lines. So it really puts our power lines in a precarious situation and we have the entire company on alert right now waiting to see what happens," says DTE spokesperson Scott Simons.

WEATHER ALERT: ICE STORM WARNING

Simons says to be prepared, as power outages are likely if ice comes in. "We're hoping that doesn't happen, but should the ice come in, make sure you have emergency kits and be prepared for whatever comes in as far as ice and heavy winds," he says.

Fox 2's Ron Savage talks with Dave Wolak from Aco Hardware who advises on how to build a proper home emergency kit.
