What are the odds two members of the same family would have unscheduled surgery on the same day in the same hospital for the same condition? Not very high, but two St. Cloud brothers did.
St. Cloud Hospital acknowledged that it is highly unusual and extremely rare, but on Monday, the Hanson brothers headed into surgery together.
Both Leroy and Bruce Hanson are now recovering at home after being released at the exact same time as well, and FOX 9 News spoke with the elder brother, Leroy, at his home in Sartell, and younger brother Bruce in Villard.
Although the two live an hour apart, it's easy to see they are two peas in a pod despite the distance. In fact, the way they answer questions, it would be easy to mistake them for twins.
With Leroy at age 65 and Bruce at age 63, they're still similar in the way they like to do things.
"They say something like that only happens with twins, you know," Bruce Hanson quipped.
On Sunday night, Bruce Hanson was on his farm in Villard when he started feeling ill and called his brother to ask him if he could take him to the hospital.
"It was 6 o'clock when I called and I thought if I left it, I would be dead in the morning," he recalled.
Leroy Hanson didn't hesitate.
"I was quite worried because he was in a lot of pain," Leroy Hanson told FOX 9 News.
That night at St. Cloud Hospital, Leroy Hanson soon found himself suffering as well.
"The pain was quite excruciating," he recalled. "It started out mellow, like indigestion. It didn't take long and you were hurting."
So, Leroy Hanson took himself home. On Monday morning, he learned his brother was about to go into surgery to remove his gal bladder. He also found himself experiencing eerily similar symptoms.
"I woke up Monday morning and I was in extreme pain," Leroy Hanson said.
So, Leroy came to the same hospital. Less than 12 hours later, he too had surgery to remove his gal bladder.
"It was so bizarre that you don't -- or can't -- even imagine that same thing, same hospital, same day," he remarked.
Bruce Hanson joked that the pair should have tried their luck at the lottery since the odds seemed so astronomical. Even without a jackpot win, the two are now local celebrities of sorts.
