2 Prior Lake-Savage schools cancel Friday classes over heat

Posted: Updated:

Students attending Hidden Oaks and Twin Oaks schools in the Prior Lake-Savage School District will not have to head to school on Friday due to the ongoing hot weather.

The announcement was made one day after Minneapolis Public Schools canceled classes at 27 schools for the remainder of the week due to the sweltering conditions inside classrooms without air conditioning.

In a release, Prior Lake -Savage School District said that although the portable air conditioning units and other measures were able to provide some relief, the conditions remain too difficult for teaching and learning as the hot and humid weather persists.

Twin Oaks is air conditioned, but since many students cross the street to attend class at Hidden Oaks, leaders decided both schools should close their doors.

All other schools in the district will remain open on Friday, including WestWood Elementary. Crews were able to restore air conditioning to that facility on Thursday afternoon.

Officials estimate the new air conditioning units at Hidden Oaks will be up and running next month.
