Vandals spray paint Edina's South View Middle School

EDINA, Minn. (KMSP) -

The community of Edina is on the lookout for vandals after a middle school was sprayed with profane graffiti targeting the school's principal and staff.

By Monday, most of the damage at South View Middle School had been cleaned up -- but police photos captured the hateful language that was spray painted onto the building at about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The graffiti contained references to drugs and several curse words and offensive epithets targeting the gay community. A specific name was also spray painted near the door -- the principal's.

"The best-case scenario is that people that did this would own it, we would have a conversation and we would move on," Dr. Beth Russell told FOX 9 News. "People would learn from their mistakes."

According to Russell, every corner of the school building was painted, with roughly 30 to 50 tags targeting the principal and staff members.

The vandals were caught on surveillance video, and police are still working to identify them. School administrators told FOX 9 News they do not know if the culprits attend the school, but they are confident they are teens or younger.
