SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

16 years ago this week, Sherri Muzher was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that has robbed her of a life she always hoped to have, and now in its final stages making her a hostage of her own body.

However, this 43-year-old still wants to give something back.

"We're all here on earth to make a difference," she said.

Homebound and now living in Flat Rock, the law school graduate and avid writer can no longer use her skills she once thrived on, but she believes she can still help others. That's why she wants to end her life and donate her organs.

"It would be a nice legacy to give life," Muzher said.

This could reignite a political and legal battle that hasn't been fought in Michigan since the 1990s when Dr. Death himself, Jack Kevorkian, took the ethical issue head on.

"Her motivations seem to be very heartfelt. She wants to both control her own destiny and also to help other people, and I think that's a very compelling story to tell," said Wayne State University law professor Lance Gable.

Could we ever see a change in Michigan's law?

"It think that it's possible, but it's something that in Michigan in particular is going to be very controversial given our history with Dr. Kevorkian," he said.

Gables said currently there are only four states that allows physician assisted suicide. If this would ever be allowed to happen in Michigan, there would need to be some safe guards in place.

Muzher is also concerned about abuse and exploitation. She believes the person would have to be of sound mind, it would be a personal decision, not a family decision, and the disease would have to be in its advanced stages.

Muzher said she's not asking for pity, just another option.

"We ought to be able to make our own decisions, and if that collateral effect means helping others, why would anyone have a problem with that?" she said.

Right now there is no state that allows assisted suicide to harvest organs.
