DETROIT (WJBK) -

Windsor and Woodwall on Detroit's east side is a stone's throw away from Grosse Pointe.  Monday night, fire crews responded to a white house tucked away behind some woods.  The caller said heavy smoke was coming from the roof.

"It was like a big flame, and I heard all the commotion," said Jermoe Merideth.

"I've seen at least five, six houses catch fire in the middle of the night," Valerie Klaft explained.  "I'm worried now."

Klaft said there are arsons in her neighborhood all the time.  Many of the houses on her street are abandoned, while others are plagued with squatters.

The bodies of a 65-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman were found inside the home.  Sources said one had been bludgeoned to death, the other shot in the back of the head.

"It's terrible," Klaft remarked.  "I didn't even know if anyone was living there or not.  It's hard to tell."

Fire crews found blood and shell casings at the scene.  The case has been handed over to the Detroit Police Department's homicide unit.
