Officials say thousands of turkeys were killed in a large structure fire at a farm outside of Melrose on Thursday.
The fire was reported by a passerby at about 3:51 a.m. The caller reported there was a very large structure fire on the property located at 37403 355th Avenue in Grove Township, near Melrose, Minn.
By the time firefighters and police arrived, the barn was fully engulfed in flames. The barn is estimated to be a total loss.
The Terres family, which has been farming turkeys for three years, estimated the loss at $500,000. The building itself is gone, along with the birds which were brought in just hours before.
"The birds weren't even a day old yet, and something went wrong," explained Peter Terres Jr. "The fire marshal will come out, see what went wrong."
The cause and origin of the fire is currently unknown.
The Terres family plans to rebuild -- just like they have done twice before after fire struck their 50-year-old family business. Peter Terres Sr. bought the farm and turned it into five -- and a business he calls Quality Turkey Inc., which raises one million turkeys each year.
