Do financial woes for Hostess mean goodbye to the Twinkie?

Posted: Updated:

Despite their popular products, Hostess as a brand is not doing so great.

The company filed for bankruptcy in January, and again last week.

Hostess' CEO said nothing could be done but shut everything down and lay off more than 18,000 people nationwide after its second largest union went on strike.

The strike is due to a dispute over slashing of wages, pensions, and benefits.

The Teamsters Union, which also has members in Hostess factories, settled with the company, but their counterpart in the Bakers Union fought on despite calls from its members and the Teamsters to find a solution.

Thirty different kinds of foods fall under the Hostess brand, including Ding Dongs, Ho Hos, Dolly Madison, Drakes and even Wonder Bread. Not to forget the most famous of its products, the Twinkie.

The cream filled snack cake has even made its way into legal lexicon. The "Twinkie Defense," as it became known, helped reduce the charges against San Francisco supervisor Dan White after he shot and killed the city's Mayor and first openly gay city supervisor, Harvey Milk. White's attorney partially blames the sugary snack for making his client lose his sense of reasoning.

As news spread that Hostess was going into liquidation, snack cake lovers around the country stocked up. The company says it will sell off its inventory and then leave it up to the market to decide if Twinkies will really last forever.
