Officials confirm a 73-year-old man bound to a wheelchair is recovering in the hospital from the injuries he sustained when a car careened into his White Bear Lake home on Tuesday.
The afternoon crash near the intersection of Pine Pointe and Otter Lake Road left a large hole in the side of the home.
Neighbors told FOX 9 News that the victim, identified by residents as Duane Langrehr, had no idea what hit him.
"He's basically confined to a wheel chair," said neighbor Bill Floren. "He can move a little bit, but he was sitting in the sun room where he always is -- poor guy. All of a sudden, the car drives into the sun room, bumps him. Didn't knock him over or anything like that, and my understanding is there was a beam that barely missed his head."
Floren says he has known Langrehr since 2000, when the homes were built. Luckily, officials say his injuries are not life-threatening.
As for the driver, police say 50-year-old Michael Bibeau was not injured -- but they do believe he was drunk when he ran off the road.
"It's terrible to have people under the influence driving behind the wheel," Floren said. "Get him off the road."
Bibeau does have a previous arrest on a drunken driving charge dating back to 2000; however, officials with the Ramsey County Attorney's Office are awaiting the results of a blood test before deciding whether or not to charge him in the crash.
