Dr. Jill Biden campaigns in Twin Cities

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

With the presidential election just 17 days away, both sides of the campaign are feeling the pressure to rally support.

While several polls show the candidates neck and neck, a new Gallup poll had Republican Mitt Romney pulling ahead President Barack Obama by six percentage points.

The vice president's wife, Dr. Jill Biden, was in Minneapolis Saturday to rally volunteers. This is her second stop in the Twin Cities this campaign season.

Biden, an assistant professor, made education a key issue at Saturday's rally by highlighting the Obama Administration's education policies.

"As a teacher, I want to make sure we continue to invest in quality education and that's why President Obama and my husband are moving this country forward," she said.

Biden pointed to the increase in funding for Pell Grants and the reforms to student loans to make them easier to pay back.

The Romney campaign has criticized Obama's policies, accusing him of driving up education spending without improving quality.

The second lady's trip also underscored Minnesota's importance nationally come November.

While the Republican ticket has shied away from Minnesota to focus on battleground states instead, the state's Republican Party said Democrats in Minnesota may see the tide turn.

In response to Dr. Biden's visit, the Republican Party of Minnesota said in a statement through their website: "The Obama Campaign never predicted that Minnesota would be in play, but poll after poll is showing that the race is tightening up here and Minnesotans are tired of the Obama agenda.

"We've said all along, we go all out," said Jeff Bloidgett, Obama's Minnesota Campaign Director. "Races in Minnesota tend to be close. The last two elections showed that that means take nothing for granted."

Minneapolis was just one of several stops for the second lady. After meeting with volunteers in the Twin Cities, Biden will travel to Duluth to rally troops. She's then slated to go to Wisconsin on Sunday.

The Obama Campaign also announced Saturday Vice President Joe Biden will attend a campaign event on Friday, Oct. 26, in Wisconsin. Details regarding that visit have yet to be released.
