The Minnesota Department of Health will continue calling people to let them know if they're infected with the fungal meningitis that's already killed seven people nationwide. State health officials say three women in Minnesota are being treated for mild symptoms of fungal meningitis
On Thursday, a Minnesota attorney announced what he says is the first federal lawsuit against the company blamed for a deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis.
The suit alleges that the New England Compounding Center -- a pharmacy in Massachusetts -- was negligent went it sent out more than 17,000 doses of the contaminated medication. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates nearly 14,000 people may have been infected.
On Thursday, the CDC added 33 more confirmed cases and two additional deaths from the past day, bringing the total number cases to 170 nationwide with 14 fatalities.
The plaintiff is a woman from Savage who received four steroid injections in September, and FOX 9 News spoke with Barbe Puro's son, who said his mother wasn't feeling well enough to give the interview herself because she has been suffering from headaches and nausea for the past week.
According to her family, Puro received those injections at Minnesota Advanced Pain Clinic -- one of two Minnesota clinics to receive the tainted injections. Puro went to the emergency room this past weekend to get tested for fungal meningitis, and she is still waiting for confirmation on those tests.
Of the three confirmed cases in Minnesota, two of the patients have already been released from the hospital. The third is expected to be released soon.
