What began as a medical call in February for a toddler who was injured so severely he couldn't be saved is now a murder investigation in Hennepin County.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office ruled that 19-month-old Cortell Short died from complications of neglect and multiple injuries caused by another person -- and there is no question that the young boy suffered through most of his short life.
The medical examiner's report shows numerous fractured bones -- including his skull -- as well as a sedative in the boy's system at the time of death.
Emergencies were first called to the boy's home in February on a medical call, but he died a short time later despite treatment at a nearby hospital.
The boy's mother, 27-year-old Shacara Foster is currently in jail and has been since March, when she was taken in for a probation violation. She has not yet been charged in her son's death, but she is being held without bond.
Meanwhile, investigators are being very tight-lipped about what they know, and they refused to comment on whether any additional arrests will be made in the case.
